All this winter weather had me thinking about fun, slippery adventures in the past. I specifically remember growing up a certain bus ride that was rather hair raising. You see we had to ride the bus about 15 miles to school. We had a great bus driver whom I was very close to. She was an older lady and she was friendly and kind......she was a good driver too. On this particularly slick day the roads were packed snow and just deep enough no gravel was exposed for traction.....we approached a 90 degree turn in the road and went around it like normal only somehow we were now seemingly floating......spining and facing all the wrong ways...it was confusing and fast and it was over before we knew it, we did slightly hit a bank along the road but stayed in motion the entire time. When we "came to" and realized we were still moving but in the opposite direction it was amazing my dear sweet laid back bus driver never stopped she just drove right on out of that spin! Of course we did have to stop and turn around to get headed back in the correct direction to actually GET to school but imagine the nerves of steel she had to have had to just drive right on outta that wild ride......she's my hero!
Can you imagine being a bystander to that? Makes me laugh so hard thinking about how all us kids' eyes had to have been HUGE and confused and I am sure the bus driver's knuckles were white and also had matching bugged out eyes. The really amazing part is that this county gravel road was roughly 30 ft wide and the bus was probably exactly 29.5ft long!!!! There was not even any damage to the bus at all......it was really pretty sad we were hoping there was horrid damage to back up the tale we had just endured and therefore give us credibility with our non-bus riding peers...no such luck. Also it would have been really cool to have a replacement bus since riding the same bus every day of your life can get so dull. Imagine counting the same rivets in the ceiling or staring at the same dirty rubber flooring. It can get really old so it is super exciting when there is a new set or rivets to count or a newer rubber floor to dirty up! Ahh the simple days.....sometimes I do wish a big yellow bus would stop in front of MY house and take my 4 darlings for a nice 7 hour break. Imagine what I could do during all that time.......oh dream is over......back to thoughts of lesson planning and the ever challenging adventure of teaching Spud Man to read.
