Here is the group of pigs we had to choose from when we went to pick them out. They are about 2 1/2 months old we were told. We chose 3 that we liked and loaded them into our suburban....we had a tarp lining the whole back, a wire large dog crate to contain them and we proceeded home for a VERY smelly drive home. Whoa, THAT was rank! Wheweee!
Here is Spud Man's pig, he named him curly because of his curly ears. All the farm animals that are being raised for meat have to have food names. So the name Curly is short for curly fries. Later on his ears no longer curled, at least his tail is still curly like a curly fry right?
The small gilt (that is what you call a young female pig) has been named Precious. This name came partly from the new Ice Age movie and partly after the Precious brand of string cheese. The gilt on the right got named Pineapple because pineapple is soooo good with pork! They love to root and dig up things to eat and they say the higher the dirt and mud is up their nose and face the happier they are. I'd say they are pretty happy!
Spud Man built a sturdy shelter for them, it is built out of all salvaged materials and it cost us very little.
Here, he is working to try get them used to being handled and tamed some. After a few weeks they love to be scratched and loved on. Before, they were pretty spooked about people getting too close.
Stay tuned for more pics of these guys coming soon. They are growing quickly and we are enjoying their antics and enthusiasm on the farm.
